Cause and effect

When we get married and peer as best we can into the future, we often see babies and birthdays, vacations together and anniversaries, raised glasses of champagne and tender nights. We often see what we hope will be there when the future arrives.

Unfortunately, our lives can twist and turn in unexpected directions, sometimes taking a couple in love onto separate paths. In some cases, the couple and paths join together again after a disruptive life event, and sometimes not. Let's take a look at some of those difficult, disruptive life events recently discussed in a Health magazine article.

Here are some of the life events that can lead to divorce, even when the couple involved is strong, deeply in love and committed to the relationship.

Some couples witness violence or tragic loss -- a murder, fatal car accident, act of terrorism, death of a child and so on -- that pulls them tightly together. In some cases, however, the couple needs to get away from each other in order to heal. The memories of the trauma are too painful, and anyone who reminds them of the pain must be left behind in order to stop a perpetual reliving of the terrible event.

Chronic health conditions can change relationships by creating insurmountable financial debt and emotional burdens some people are simply not capable of carrying. The illness can change not only the present, but cast a dark cloud over the future.

Recent research shows that some men, especially, might struggle to take on a caregiver role that our culture has left them ill-prepared to assume.

A 2011 study showed that unemployed men are more likely to leave their spouses and that their spouses are also more likely to leave them, creating a double bind for those struggling to find work.
